DDCA still mulling over CIC

New Delhi, Feb. 4: Nearly two months after the proposal for a Cricket Improvement Committee was first mooted, the Delhi & District Cricket Association’s executive committee met here on Thursday for the first time to discuss the proposal.

Former Delhi cricketers had called for this committee to be formed, on the lines of those already functioning in Mumbai and Karnataka to check the falling standard of cricket in the capital. However, nothing concrete came of the meeting with the DDCA saying it wanted to mull over the proposal for some more time. "The executive committee met today with the sole purpose to discuss the CIC, its legalities and other formalities. The process is on and we will be able to give some concrete information about it in two or three weeks," DDCA general secretary Sneh Bansal said on Thursday. The proposed CIC is facing serious opposition from the DDCA sports committee, but Bansal denied this.

The demand for the CIC came from former Delhi cricketers Bishan Singh Bedi, Kirti Azad, Maninder Singh, Surinder Khanna and Venkat Sunderam in the aftermath of the fifth India-Sri Lanka ODI being abandoned at the Kotla because of an ‘unfit’ pitch last December. Former Delhi skipper Azad said that they were still waiting to hear from the DDCA on the matter. "The DDCA hasn’t officially got back to us after their meeting. I don’t know what is there to discuss, CIC is obviously the best way to go," Azad said.

On the course of action if DDCA failed to act on its promise, Azad said, "DDCA can’t sweep this matter under the carpet. We’ll not back down till something concrete happens."

‘Kotla pitch shaping up well’

Meanwhile, the Kotla hosted a friendly match between a DDCA XI and a Services XI on the day, with the venue getting ready to host the Indian Premier League matches from March 17.

Over 400 runs were scored in 40 overs between the two sides and DDCA pitch supervisor Venkat Sunderam was happy with the way the surface was turning out. "The pitch will still take some time to settle but it is shaping up well for the IPL. We are planning to prepare 3-4 pitches for the event," Sunderam said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
