Delhi HC judges reveal assets

NEW DELHI, Feb. 5: The Delhi high court judges, including the Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah, made their assets public on Friday evening. The information has been posted on the website, www.delhihighcourt.nic.in.

The declaration of assets by the judges comes after the Delhi high court in its verdict last month had said that the judges’ declaration of assets to the chief justices was mandatory and such information should be made public.

The Delhi high court Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah has in his declaration said that he, along with his family members, has assets to the tune of Rs 4.27 crores which also include a flat worth Rs 2.52 crores in Mumbai where his parents live.

Justice Shah has individually made investments in bank deposits, shares, mutual fund and insurance policies to the tune of Rs 1.02 crores. He also owns an office at posh Nariman Point area in South Mumbai which has been put on rent. However, its market value has not been revealed in the declaration.

Highly-placed sources, talking to this newspaper, said, after the full court meeting held last week, all 42 judges agreed to declare their assets in view of the full court resolution of the Delhi high court on August 28 last year when it was agreed to make them public after there was a huge debate within and outside judiciary to bring transparency.

Last month, the high court in a landmark judgment held that the office of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) comes within the purview of the Right to Information (RTI) act and details of judges assets should be revealed under that.

The Delhi high court judges stand third in declaring their assets after the Kerala and Madras high court judges.
