Fans go in for ‘filmy’ looks

Posters of hit films are spinning off a whole range of imitations. The latest teen craze: shooting photographs of themselves in which they’ve copied their favourite star’s look from a hit film, or posing for a picture which is a ditto popular film poster — with the same background, props and wardrobe.

After clicking these pictures the young `uns are posting them on social networking sites to show off to their peers. Their strategy: to choose their own favourite still from a movie and replicate it in a similar location. The hit scenes among youngsters — Shahid Kapoor and Kareena’s Jab We Met where they sit on a milestone, Suriya’s 80s look in Vaaranam Aayiram, Kareena’s look in 3 Idiots where she sports spectacles and a bike helmet, Katrina’s look in Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani... the list is long. They say ‘it’s cool’ to flaunt their pics in identical clothes and background as their favourite celebs.  Rajarathina Babu, who was impressed by Suriya’s character in the movie Varanam Aayiram, took pictures in exactly the same pose, including the costumes and the 80s hairstyle.Speaking about it, Babu says, “I’m a big fan of Suriya. His character from the movie impressed me a lot. I wanted to make an exact replica of the character. So I got the same kind of shirt and spectacles. I used Photoshop to bring that colour tone to the picture. It came out every well and I really loved it.”Expressing similar sentiments is Saranya. B, a computer science student. Along with her friend she posed like ‘Shahid and Kareena’ in Jab We Met. She says, “My friend and I liked the movie and I’m big fan of both of them. We wanted to take a picture of us sitting on a milestone, with a background like that in the movie poster. We were so excited when we finally the place. We immediately clicked a picture which looked very much like a Jab We Met poster, where he was sitting down and I was sitting on the milestone. All my friends liked the picture.”They haven’t stopped there, with just the pictures. Now they are including a copy of the movie in the pictures, using image-editing softwares. A few even frame these pictures and present them to their friends as birthday gifts. “Recently, my friend celebrated his birthday and instead of the regular greeting cards, he gave us a picture where we both have Suriya’s look from his movie. That was most exciting,” sums up Babu.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
