Gadkari cautions seniors
Indore, Feb. 17: In what appears to be a course correction for his beleaguered party, newly-elected BJP president Nitin Gadkari made it clear that the vaulting ambitions of senior party leaders, and not ordinary party workers, are posing problems for the party.
In a shift from the party’s dependence on its traditional votebank of the urban middle class, he reached out to dalit voters and said that the issue of untouchability is part of the party’s "political commitment".
In the inaugural address to the national executive, Mr Gadkari called upon senior leaders to provide opportunities to the young. He said, "Apni rekha ka dayra badhayen, doosron ki rekha chhoti na karen (Increase the boundary of your limits, do not curtail the limits of others)." An indication of the move to reach out to dalits also came from Mr Gadkari’s mention of his visit to a dalit party worker’s home during which he shared a meal with his family.
