Metro worker dies in mishap
New Delhi, Jan. 31: A 25-year-old worker died at a Delhi Metro construction site in west Delhi when a steel barricade, which was being removed by a crane from the site, fell on him.
Police sources said the deceased, identified as Vipin, a resident of Orissa, was putting the steel plate used as a barricade between the hooks of a crane’s arm at a Paschim Vihar construction site when it slipped from the hooks and fell on him.The sources said that immediately after this, managers at the site shut their office and fled from the spot, leaving the injured man unattended. The police was informed by one of the workers, and Vipin was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation claimed, however, that the worker was not part of its crew. “We are verifying the antecedents of the worker who has died in the accident. The work on the stretch has been subcontracted to IGM construction group, which completed the work two months ago. There was no construction work going on at the site, and Vipin died because he was hit by an unidentified vehicle,” DMRC’s chief PRO Anuj Dayal said.Ranjeet, one of the dead man’s co-workers, however, said: “No one from the management bothered to take Vipin to hospital. They closed the office as soon as the incident happened. We had to call the police, who rushed him to hospital.”The police has registered a case under Section 304A Indian Penal Code and has begun investigations. “Some eyewitnesses are being examined to ascertain what exactly led to the death of the worker. A case has been registered,” deputy commissioner of police (west) Sharad Aggarwal said.Age Correspondent
