Mystery over Isro shootout, probe on

New Delhi/Bengaluru, March 15: The Centre has sought a report from the Karnataka government after an incident involving gunfire at a key Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) facility on the outskirts of Bengaluru early Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred outside the highly protected Byalalu Tracking Complex, from where India’s first moon mission, Chandrayaan-I was tracked. The CISF mans the complex. Mystery shrouded the incident after a CISF guard claimed that two unidentified persons shot at him very early on Tuesday morning, but the police raised doubts and virtually ruled out a terror attack. The incident comes at a time when there are intelligence reports that suggest Isro facilities face terrorist threats.
In New Delhi, Union home minister P. Chidambaram termed the shooting incident as an “amateurish attempt” and said a security review of the sensitive facility has been ordered. Asked whether the incident could be termed a terror attack, Mr Chidambaram said, “Well, what else do you call it at the moment? At the moment you can only call it an attack. Whether it was a terrorist or somebody else, we will know.”
Karnataka CM B.S. Yeddyurappa, away in his home town Shimoga to celebrate the Ugadi festival, directed the police to be on high alert and also summoned a meeting of top police officials here on Wednesday to review the situation.
