National rifle body bows before Bindra gun
New Delhi,Jan. 18: Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra’s plea to consider his international scores for inclusion in the national team for the World Cups was finally accepted by the national
federation on Monday, two days after the Beijing Olympic gold medallist threatened to quit the sport.
Under intense pressure from the sports ministry and the IOA, the National Rifle Association of India agreed to exempt Bindra from selection trials for the third and fourth World Cup (at Fort Benning in the US from May 22 to 31 and at Belgrade from June 26 to July 7) on account of his scores in international competitions. “We will consider his international scores for the third and fourth World Cups. But Abhinav’s selection in the first and second World Cups is impossible...” NRAI secretary-general B.S. Sethi said Monday.
