April 2: Some calls made to the customer care numbers of telecom companies will now be chargeable.
A number of companies like Airtel, Vodafone and Aircel have started charging subscribers for calls made to customer care relating to queries or requests, but all calls on complaints about service are still free.
A senior telecom executive said the permission of Trai, the telecom regulator, had been obtained before effecting this change.
A number of telecom NGOs have criticised the move, saying it was putting an unfair burden on consumers.
Telecom Watchdog secretary Anil Kumar also criticised Trai for agreeing to the telecom companies’ proposal. Consumer Care Society secretary Ravindra Nath Guru said it was a move by these companies to “cover up revenue losses due to competition.”
