Rohit called in as cover for Laxman
Nagpur, Feb. 4: Middle order batsman Rohit Sharma has been drafted in as cover for V.V.S. Laxman for the first Test against South Africa, scheduled to commence here on Saturday. With Laxman’s availability being uncertain, India could well end up playing two debutants in S. Badrinath and Rohit in the series opener.
Laxman had suffered a split webbing on his left hand while going for a catch in the first Test against Bangladesh at Chittagong in January.
Laxman did take part in the fielding session on Thursday and also had a batting stint with the second batch, but the fact that he was not a part of the slip-catching routine suggested that the injury has not healed completely. The Indian team had a full-fledged practice session in two batches. After the fielding drill each member got to bat at the VCA stadium in Jamtha.
There was however no official word from the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Rohit called in as cover for Laxman. The Mumbai batsman did take full part in the training session. In the event of Laxman being ruled out India will most likely play with an inexperienced middle order with Murali Vijay at number three, who himself is only three Tests old.
A light shower split the Indian and South African training sessions without affecting either. India will have their final practice session on Friday morning followed by the Proteas.
