SA are lone blot on Tendulkar’s record
NAGPUR, Feb. 5: Take away the Don’s staggering average of 99.94 and the 400 of Brian Charles Lara, and every other conceivable Test batting record stands with Sachin Tendulkar. The CV has glittered right from the day he took guard as a 16-year-old. If Tendulkar would want one alteration to his resume, though, it will well be his record against South Africa.
Tendulkar after 164 Tests rides on a princely average of 55.37. But in 20 matches against South Africa his average comes down to 35.35. Only three of his 45 hundreds have come against his least favoured opponents.
Tendulkar has a century both at home and away against every country barring Zimbabwe (away) and South Africa (home). India are yet to play Bangladesh at home.
A total of 1,202 runs is poor return for a player who has handled other attacks with more comfort. At home, Tendulkar’s record takes a further dip. In eight matches he has accumulated just 367 runs at 28.23. His highest of 97 came at Mumbai in his last series as skipper in 1999-2000.
