Selective hearing: It’s in mind

London: Selective hearing? It’s all in the brain, and not ear, say scientists. A new study has revealed that selective hearing — the ability to filter out unwanted noise and conversation — exists and it is the brain that “zooms in” on sound acting like radio by tuning into certain noises while ignoring everything else.

And, according to the scientists, the study could help explain why people with hearing difficulties lose this ability and are swamped by background noise, thereby pave the way for combating deafness, the Daily Telegraph reported.
A team at University College London’s Ear Institute is using a variety of techniques to investigate the issue.     —PTI

VETERAN ACTRESS Sharmila Tagore and her daughter Soha Ali Khan, who have acted together for the first time in a film, described the experience as “memorable.”
The film, Life Goes On, directed by British Indian director Sangeeta Datta, was the closing film at the Tongues of Fire festival. The mother-daughter duo star in the film along with Girish Karnad and Om Puri. Sharmila, who said she gets better roles in Bengali cinema than Hindi films, plays mother to her daughter Soha in the film. However, Soha revealed she was “terrified” while working with her mother as she is a “perfectionist.”
“It was quite terrifying. She is larger than life and quite a dominant personality and very very good at her job and very good at being a mother. It all just worked so well,” said Soha.
