Sleepless nights

Having a sleepover is a great way to bond with your buddies over some games, gossip and movies. While rom-coms, teenage romance and comedy flicks are entertaining at sleepovers, there’s another lot that swears by horror flicks when it comes to passing the night.  Here’s a list of some of the best horror flicks that will spook you out as their stories unfold:

Warning: Not for the weak-hearted. The Grudge series: The first part is a remake of the Japanese film Ju-on: The Grudge. It describes a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage or extreme sorrow. In the second part, a young woman is exposed to the same mysterious curse that afflicted her sister. In Grudge 3, the events occur several days after the Chicago vignette of the second part. The Saw series: This American horror franchise consists of six parts. The films are about the fictional character of John Kramer, also called the “Jigsaw Killer”, who kills his victims by trapping them in situations. By doing this, he tests their will to live via physical or psychological torture. The Exorcist: Released in 1973, this is one of the most popular horror flicks of all-time. It deals with the demonic possession of a young girl. Her mother desperately tries to bring her daughter back to normal through an exorcism conducted by two priests. The Omen: A remake of the 1976 Richard Donner film with the same name, this film revolves around Robert Thorn, an American diplomat, whose son dies after birth. He adopts another newborn and he soon realises that his son may be the devil incarnate. “I really like The Omen — I watched it with my friends at a sleepover,” says engineering student Vinay M.The Ring series: The first part tells the story of a mysterious cursed videotape. A young journalist sets off to investigate the tape and realises that the viewer will die seven days after watching it. The sequel shows the story of the journalist six months after the events of the first part. Naomi Watts plays the journalist. The Exorcism of Emily Rose: This horror flick is loosely based on a true story. In this film, a lawyer (played by Laura Linney) takes on a negligent homicide case involving a priest, who performed an exorcism on a young girl called Emily (Jennifer Carpenter). Other horror flicks include The Orphan, Hostel, Paranormal Activity, Night of The Living Dead and The Others. “The Psycho series also makes for a good sleepover-watch if you like horror films,” suggests student Shruti K. Adds Vinay, “I’ve watched Evil Dead, 1408 and Child’s Play too. I’ve also seen Hills Have Eyes, but I think it’s a little gross.”If eerie, spine-chilling and supernatural is your kind of fun, then watch these flicks. PS: Stay away from them if you’re the kind that will have sleepless nights after a gory out-of-the-world experience.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
