Srinagar boy shot dead
Srinagar, Feb. 5: A teenager, later identified as Zahid Farooq, was killed when uniformed men on board a security force vehicle opened fire, reportedly after being jeered at by some youths, at Brein along the Boulevard here on Friday, witnesses said. It is not clear if the vehicle belonged to the BSF or the CRPF.
According to another version, a rock hurled at the vehicle led to the firing. The locals, however, alleged there was no such provocation. The incident is likely to redouble public anger, already inflamed over the death of a 13-year-old student in police action last Sunday.
CM Omar Abdullah, now in New Delhi, ordered an inquiry by Kashmir divisional commissioner Naseema Lankar, and directed state DGP Kuldeep Khoda, now in Jammu, to rush to Srinagar and investigate. The police said locals alleged the vehicle belonged to the BSF, but since the incident was near a CRPF camp, an irate crowd soon gathered there and pelted stones. A CRPF spokesman said none of its men were in the area when the firing took place.
