Toofan is acting chief of Pakistan Taliban
Islamabad, Feb. 2: The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has appointed Malik Noor Jamal, alias Maulana Toofan, as acting chief to head the outfit in place of a "wounded" Hakimullah Mehsud, sources said.
The reports come after rumours that Hakimullah Mehsud was slain in a US missile strike last month. The Taliban deny he is dead. Maulana Toofan is a local Taliban commander from Orakzai Agency. The sources said Malik Noor Jamal would head the organisation until the TTP leadership decides its course of action.
The TTP again on Monday denied reports of Hakimullah Mehsud’s death in a January 14 US drone attack in Shaktoi area of South Waziristan and insisted this was intelligence-agency propaganda propagated by the "West-oriented" media. There were unconfirmed reports that Hakimullah Mehsud was killed last Friday after succumbing to injuries at his father-in-law’s house.
