Towers on schools, hospitals to be removed
New Delhi ,Feb. 8: Giving nod to a liberalised policy for installation of mobile phone towers, the MCD on Monday said that those installed over roof tops of schools, hospitals and dispensaries in the city would be removed immediately, while those in areas like residential apartments and commercial places will continue to exist.
The MCD made the announcement based on the recommendations of a report compiled by a sub-committee of the civic body, which was constituted to look into the matter. “The mobile towers set up on roof tops of hospitals, schools and dispensaries will have to be removed given the sensitive status of these buildings, which cater to requirements of people who are ill and vulnerable. As radiations emitted by these towers can prove harmful, they will not be allowed at such places,” stated Meera Aggrawal, councillor and chairman of the sub-committee.The report of the sub-committee stated that the mobile phone towers emit radiations which can be harmful if people are constantly exposed to them. About 1,600 applications for mobile towers out of 2,517 illegal towers are still pending with the MCD.Meanwhile, the MCD has approved the budget of over Rs 6,000 crores for 2010-11, which includes a hike in property-tax with amendments in the earlier proposal, while rejecting the proposal to impose a professional tax. Though the MCD commissioner had in its budget proposal had proposed across the board a five per cent hike in property tax, the MCD on Monday lowered the raise to about two to three per cent for different categories.
