Winslet is national treasure

London: Titanic star Kate Winslet is a national treasure after she became the first actress to be audited by the UK government.

The value of the Oscar-winning actress to the country has been gauged at a staggering £60 million, according to an analysis of her value to Britain by economists funded by the government, reported Telegraph online.

The 34-year-old was audited by the UK Film Council as it seeks to develop a formula for assessing the value of a "creative person" to the economy. Winslet was chosen as a test case for the calculation because she has a strong track record and is well known abroad. Jeremy Hunt, the shadow culture secretary, said that Winslet is a good example on how to rekindle the spirit of creative fever once known as cool Britannia. "I think she is an extraordinary actress, I loved her in Revolutionary Road, but also as a symbol of what Britain can offer the world," said Hunt.

He said he was delighted by the recognition that Winslet, who won the Oscar for best actress for her role in The Reader, is so valuable to British culture. —PTI

Lohan cries in public over family feud

London: The ongoing war of words between Lindsay Lohan and her father seems to have finally taken a toll on the Hollywood starlet as she broke down in public during a nightout.

The Mean Girls star was pictured in an alley behind Los Angeles’ fashionable Crow Bar, talking on her mobile and crying, reported Daily Mail online.

The 23-year-old looked fashionable in leggings, a white dotted blouse and strappy stilettos, but seemed on the verge of tears as she went back into the club. The actress had used networking site Twitter to claim that her estranged father Michael Lohan had threatened to kill her mother Deanna if she ever left him.

"She blames herself for staying with him for so long, I’d beg her not to leave because he always threatened to kill her if she did," wrote Lohan. "It’s so sad that I even have to share this with everyone, but I haven’t had a real relationship with Michael Senior in years. That is the truth," wrote the actress. —PTI

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
