Writing on the tablet gets clearer

We shall explore this so that there are no misconceptions — What is HDMI and is it necessary to buy a TV with HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) inputs? Just like a USB interface is to computers, HDMI will soon be to most digital AV products.

Most digital AV products now connect to your TV through the HDMI interface. We see this now with blue ray disc play, video games and many of the latest camcorders which display awesome pictures and terrific sound when connected through HDMI.

A 19-wired single cable connected to a multi-pin connector forms the interface. Through the interface you can transfer data at very fast speeds and can transfer both audio and video on the same cable. It saves you from cable clutter. Before HDMI, if you had to connect your DVD player to your TV, you needed a video cable and a pair of audio cables for stereo sound or a separate S-video cable for superior picture quality or a component video cable for a better picture. Now, with HDMI cables you simply put one end of the cable into your HD TVs that have HDMI inputs and the other end to the HD device with a HDMI port. This will transport both audio and video on the same cable.

Products with a HDMI port gained momentum as early as 2003 and it is estimated that by this year-end, they will cross the 400,000,000-mark and all digital TVs will have at least one HDMI.

Cable v/s satellite

Another war is brewing and this time round, the contestants are really doing some heavy cleaning by washing their dirty linen in public.

Zee Turner Ltd in an aggressive bid to recover their dues from Hathway Cable and Datacom have released a huge advertisement in a popular daily which serves a dual purpose — one, to announce the list of their channels and two — throw a blow to their competitor and alleged defaulters.

The advert displays 33 icons of the channels with the following base line ‘Parts of Mumbai will be devoid of the above channels — 33 television channels due to Hathway Cable and Datacom Ltd defaulting on their payment to Zee Turner.’ Now isnt that a double whammy?

Apple’s iPad

Steve Jobs, the head honcho of Apple and innovative brain behind the Apple computer and the iPod has done it again and with greater panache.

He has once again picked up an existing half-cooked product namely the tablet computer, added his innovative ideas to it and created a product which he unveiled in January this year and has aptly christened it iPad.

The iPad is a thin tablet-shaped device with a ten-inch touch screen, which should be on sale in most computer and AV stores by late March.

The iPad, basically an electronic book and tablet computer aimed at book readers and business people, is not a very novel idea. But with the present hype surrounding this product which is blessed and backed by Jobs, this pad promises to rewrite history and transform three industries — media, computing and telecom. The competitors are already seeing the writing on the tablet.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
