Youngsters shake a leg, the online way

Ever wondered how your once flat-footed friend now gyrates to hip-swivelling numbers at parties? The answer is she turned to cyberspace and so can you.Several college students frustrated by their two left feet are transforming themselves into the life of the party by learning dance steps from online tutorials and YouTube. Learning dance online is easier than going for classes and picking up these tricky dance moves has seen many students shift from the sidelines of the dance floor to occupying centerstage.Mrithula R., a second year engineering student, learnt dance moves for several new songs online and has become instantly popular in college.

“Whenever we have culturals, my friends ask me to teach them a few basic steps as I know a few different moves of the latest songs. Most of my friends compliment me on my dancing,” she says. Her friends are amazed that she never went to class, but still holds her own on the dance floor. “I feel very excited when they praise me. My pals think that I’m a natural dancer,” says Mrithula, who hasn’t yet confessed that she learnt all her moves online.Other students say learning online is a big moneysaver. Ananth Vijay, a first year communication student explains that he would have to cough up between Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for a one-month coaching class. “One needs to spend big bucks on it, it’s expensive. So I didn’t want to waste money and started learning through tutorials on the Internet. There are a lot of links, which are really amazing. Even a non-dancer can easily pick it up,” he says.Online classes are also attractive since the number of dance moves you can learn is unlimited unlike a specific number of moves to some three songs you may pick up at a dance class.Karthik Kumar was always branded a non-dancer by his friends till he discovered dance moves online.  “My friends were amazed to see me rocking on the dance floor thanks to YouTube. They have best songs and it helps a lot during parties and get-togethers,” says an excited Karthik. His days of feeling embarrassed when he goes out clubbing with friends are behind him. Parents too are happy their children are copying steps from television or the Internet rather than hiring a dance tutor. Varsha N. says her son is a good dancer, but since he is in Class 12, he has little time to join dance classes. “He is sharp and picks the steps the minute he sees something on the television. He is also learning dance moves from the Internet. I’m really happy that he is even teaching my younger daughter who is in   Class 6,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
