‘My father can be a bully’

He sets the screen on fire, both with his looks and performances. Quite naturally charming and witty, Ranbir Kapoor is the darling of the industry. His screen presence and his spontaneity makes him the first choice of every filmmaker, while every actress worth her name wants to befriend him.

In short, Ranbir has the best of both the worlds eating from the palm of his hands. We ask him if there is one aspect of his personality that not many are aware of and he says with a smile, “I’m an intense romantic at heart.” Wouldn’t a lot of his ex-girlfriends and co-stars agree with that? “I hope so,” he says with a wicked grin.
The actor is now back in Mumbai after wrapping up the schedule of Besharam and says that working with his father was a boon. “My father has always been extremely hardworking and ambitious, and I have imbibed those qualities from him. Working with my parents was a great combination of work and holiday; we got to spend quality time together. Especially, when it comes to my father, I don’t like to miss any opportunity to spend time with him,” says Ranbir.
As a person, Ranbir admits to being a complete vagabond, and his passion for food, films and travel keeps him going. “Honestly, I don’t need company. I can go on a holiday all by myself and be completely comfortable and happy about it.” Speaking of his most memorable holiday, Ranbir says, “I have gone on vacations with family and some of them have been with my girlfriends too. I have some very good memories about those trips, but I can’t divulge more information on that,” he laughs.
With his chocolate-boy looks, lineage, and popularity growing by leaps and bounds, it is not surprising that women adore him. “I studied acting in New York and this was before I started my career in Bollywood. The four years that I lived there were an eye-opener. No girl would look at me; I would go unnoticed most of the time. That was a reality check for me,” he says with the kind of modesty one never really associates with a star of his stature. He goes on to add more trivia about himself. “I am a Kapoor, I love food and films. I’m a no-fuss actor. Even as a person, I don’t like too much attention. I am happy being a loner,” he says, adding, “This is in complete contrast to the image that people have of me, as well as my family. My father can be a big bully if he wants to be. I think my easy-going approach towards life is because of my mother,” he elaborates.
As of now, Ranbir is very kicked about his film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani releasing in Russia as well. It’s a well known fact that his grandfather Raj Kapoor is a huge name in Russia. “It’s a matter of great pride and honour that my film is releasing in Russia. I know that my grandfather is worshipped there. I only hope that my film does well there and I live up to the respect and the adulation that my grandfather has earned.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
