Slow and steady Khan
He might have started off as superstar Aamir Khan’s nephew but Imran Khan needs no introduction today. Slow and steady, the young actor has come into his own over the years. And today, he is among the most sought after names in the young brigade.
“The lineage and star connection works for an actor only for a certain period of time. If I’m bad at my job, no amount of back-up I have in the industry will help me sustain,” he says. Imran, who has renovated his landmark home in Bandra, says that he is passionate about maintaining the legendary Nasir Hussain’s name and fame. “Renovating my house was just one step in that direction. I’ve personally picked up every brick, smelt every paint and even tasted the cement,” he says with a laugh.
The actor reveals his big plans to build a theatre in his bungalow that will be named after his grandmother Ayesha. “I’ve been hearing stories about me wanting to revive my grandfather’s banner. I have thought about that but there is no concrete plan as of now. But I’m in the process of chalking out the details for the theatre I want to make. That’ll be my tribute to my grandmother,” he says.
The actor who stepped into Bollywood around the same time as Ranbir Kapoor insists that he is not insecure about Ranbir zooming past him into superstardom. “I’m very happy that Ranbir is doing well. It helps all of us be on our toes and do good work. There is no insecurity. Lagging behind is a fear that all actors go through. After the debacle of my earlier films, no one wanted to work with me. That was the phase when my phone had stopped ringing. The feeling of rejection can be quite a blow! But it was around that time when Karan Johar offered to bail me out of the mess. After I Hate Luv Stories and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, I was back in the reckoning. I owe him a lot,” Imran says of his mentor, adding, “Currently, we’re working on Gori Tere Pyar Mein and I hope that I live up to his expectations.”
Imran confesses that he only competes with himself. “I don’t grudge other actors’ progress. My expectations are from myself. I want to ensure that I don’t let my uncle (Aamir Khan) and other family members down. The effort is to always focus on my growth as an actor.”
Back-to-back shooting schedules have left no time for the youngest Khan. “I haven’t taken a break in a year. But I do intend to go on a holiday after I finish shooting for Gori Tere… My wife Avantika usually takes charge of planning our vacations. She knows that I’ve been working non-stop for a year and is adamant that we take a break.”
