‘Charges against Raina baseless’

Kolkata, Oct. 25: Lashing out at British media reports that zeroed in on India’s middle-order star Suresh Raina for being seen in the company of a lady associated with a known bookie during the Asia Cup in Colombo last June, off-spinner Harbhajan Singh dispelled the story, calling it “utter rubbish.”

He also added that such reports were totally uncalled for as one should think several times before leveling charges against a player.

“Hum log jaan de ke khelte hain (we play our hearts out while representing our country). So, one should think at least a hundred times before making such allegations,” Harbhajan said on the sidelines of a promotional event here on Monday.

“In any case whatever is coming out in papers is rubbish. The BCCI too has refuted the claims,” he added.

Meanwhile, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni also defended his teammate terming the charges “baseless”.

“I think it is baseless. Whether it’s the Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC), the BCCI, ACSU or the ICC, each and everyone has already given their reaction in this regard.”

On a separate note, Harbhajan cautioned it would be a big mistake to judge New Zealand on the basis of their performance against Bangladesh. He stressed that the entire team must play to their potential for a successful time out in the coming series against the Kiwis.

“Of course, the 0-4 result was a little shocking. But let’s get one thing clear. Bangladesh in their backyard are always tough opposition. Therefore, we should focus on our job first instead of taking things for granted.”

Speaking of Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan hopes the maestro reaches the landmark of 50 Test centuries in Ahmedabad itself. “I am waiting for him to achieve this feat. Hopefully, he’ll get it in Ahmedabad. Nevertheless, hats off to Sachin for proving that nothing is impossible.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
