Aamir claims ignorance on ICC suspension clauses

Islamabad: Suspended Pakistan pacer Mohammad Aamir, who was hauled up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for playing in a club level match in Rawalpindi despite a ban, has claimed that he was 'not aware' of the clauses of his suspension.

Aamir, who remains suspended along with team mates Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif on spot-fixing charges, had bowled a few overs in a friendly club level match at a Rawalpindi stadium on Monday, following which the PCB had asked for details of the said match from its officials in the Rawalpindi Regional Cricket Academy.

“I had no intention of violating the terms and conditions of my suspension, especially when I know that the ICC tribunal is due to give its verdict on February 5. But I really was not aware about the clauses of my suspension,” the Daily Times quoted Aamir, as saying.

The pace bowler confirmed that the board had asked him for an explanation for playing in the match held between the Pakistan Army team and a club side.

“Look, it was all a misunderstanding and that is all, and I have already sent my reply to the PCB about the whole issue and made my position clear,” he said.

A PCB official had earlier confirmed that under the International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations, players suspended by the body could not take part in any match, event or activity organised by his home board or its affiliated units.

Aamir claimed that he was unaware that the ban applied to even club level cricket matches.

“It was a club friendly [match] and the PCB had nothing to do with it, and that is why I played. I have sent my explanation to the board,” he said.
