ACSU cover for playoffs
Reacting to the fallout of the “spot-fixing” scandal that erupted four days ago, the cricket control board has deployed officers from the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit to accompany the four teams that have qualified for the Indian Premier League playoff matches to be played here and thereafter in Kolkata.
The decision came at Sunday’s emergent meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s working committee in Chennai.
ACSU officials joined the two teams in the first playoff game — Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings — as they are already here in the capital, while two others will link up with the Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad when they land on Tuesday.
The ASCU men will stay with the teams and travel with them besides coordinating with team security officials, it was learnt.
Meanwhile, reports suggest the board may send an anti-corruption officer with the national team for the Champions Trophy in England and Wales next month.
When asked whether the police investigation was looking into any more players than the three named, BCCI anti-corruption unit head Ravi Sawani said, “I am not at liberty to discuss anything more with you at this stage,” he said.
He pointed out that board had set up an internal inquiry into the matter but said no deadline had been set for its report.
“We will hold out a separate disciplinary inquiry and once I submit my report to the disciplinary committee, the BCCI will take appropriate action based on my report. I can’t give you a definite time frame. It will take some time to collect all the evidences in this matter,” he said.
ROYALS act against tainted three
In a related development, the Royals suspended the contract of their three players arrested by the Delhi Police in connection with the spot-fixing controversy. “Based on the information provided by the authorities, the contracts of all three players have been suspended pending enquiry. We have already filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against all the three players earlier today,” Royals’ chairman Ranjit Barthakur said in a statement on Monday.
The franchise also expanded the security deployment for the team as suggested by the BCCI’s working committee meeting in Chennai on Sunday. The statement also said that the franchise had been hit hard by the revelations and had taken the strongest possible course of action. They also promised full cooperation with the authorities in connection with the case.
“The franchise is in daily contact with the police authorities in Delhi, Jaipur and Mumbai for providing any cooperation/information that they might require.”
Railways suspend cricketer Baburao
Meanwhile, the Railways on Monday suspended former Ranji Trophy player Baburao Yadav after his detention for involvement in the spot-fixing scandal.
Baburao was working as an operator in the Signal and Telecom division. He was posted at Nagpur with the South Central Railways.
Baburao is alleged to have introduced bookie Sunil Bhatia to Chandila.
