Awana strikes peg back Haryana
Delhi pacer Parvinder Awana (3/39) removed Sachin Rana (5) and rival captain Amit Mishra (6) in quick succession with the second new ball as Haryana frittered away a good start to end the opening day at 219/6 in their Ranji Trophy Group B game at the Bansi Lal Stadium in Lahli, Rohtak, on Saturday.
Rahul Dewan (71) and Nitin Saini (45) provided a 69-run stand for the opening wicket but the rest of the Haryana batsmen failed to convert the starts, except Rahil Dalal (batting 42) who looked solid in the middle.
Delhi included off-spinner Manoj Chauhan in the playing XI but he was not able to achieve much success on the day conceding 89 runs in 27 overs. Saini and Dewan’s stand lasted for 22 overs as the former drove an Awana delivery uppishly to be caught at mid-off by Rajat Bhatia.
Dewan and Sunny Singh (28) then added 50 runs before Singh was bowled by Sumit Narwal. Dewan’s 170ball knock finally ended when he dragged a Vikas Mishra delivery onto his stumps. Abhimanyu Khod (15) was the next to follow as he nicked a Bhatia delivery to the keeper. Bhatia, expecting some turn from the strip bowled off-breaks for five overs, nstead of his military medium. Awana then landed the double blow to peg back the hosts.
