Badri’s men lift Duleep Trophy

Visakhapatnam, Jan. 5: South Zone put their last year’s defeat in Duleep Trophy final behind them, winning this year’s edition by seven wickets over North Zone here on Saturday. Set a 178-run target after North were bowled out for 317, South took just 24 overs to romp home.

It was South’s first Duleep win after after a gap of 15 years. South Zone captain S. Badrinath was declared man-of-the-match. Opener Robin Uthappa made the North Zone bowling attack look feeble with his 71-run knock off 48 balls including three sixes and eight fours. His partner Abhinav Mukund scored a quick 63 off 67 balls while Manish Pandey, coming down the order, scored 37 off 24 balls.

Earlier, middle-order batsman Mithun Manhas top-scored for North while opener Nitin Saini made a solid 65.

“We played sensible cricket by bowling tight and fielding well. The batsmen did not have to deal with the pressure. All that they had to do was stick on for a while and wait for the runs to flow,” said Badrinath

Both the captains said that the pitch played true and was a batsmen’s paradise. “Credit must go to the South Zone bowlers, they kept it tight,” said North Zone skipper Amit Mishra.
