Badri leads South from front

Feb. 3: It was a day when application and approach prevailed over hot-blooded aggression. Badrinath’s boys proved they were mentally stronger and could apply themselves better. On the whole it was an extremely disappointing day for North-Zone; what with their last three wickets falling in 16.1 overs.

To top it all the southern top order gave their team the right start on Day Two of the Duleep Trophy final here on Wednesday. South is comfortably placed at 298 for 3.

Openers Robin Uthappa and Abhinav Mukund provided the home team with a solid start with an 85-run partnership. While Mukund was watchful and subdued during his 72-ball 34, Robin too held himself back a bit in the early stages.

However, it was the confrontation with pacer Ishant Sharma that probably provoked Robin to cut loose. The two players exchanged words when Robin slammed into Ishant while taking a run. Looks and words were exchanged before the Karnataka batsman went on the rampage — his 63-ball 66, studded with eight fours and two sixes, helped South gain psychological advantage.

Robin looked good for a century when he fell, top edging Joginder Sharma to Amit Mishra at short-mid-off as he went for an expansive pull.

Captain Badrinath showed no haste and went about his work grafting the ball around and giving the strike to a charged up Robin.
However, after Robin’s fall, Badrinath played some delectable strokes. Later, Manish Pandey joined the party and knocked the ball around for a brisk 74 off 94 balls. The duo put on 136 runs. Bodapati Sumanth later joined his captain, who is on the verge of yet another century.

Earlier, North showed some signs of aggression with centurion Dogra leading the way. He added 20 to his overnight score of 147. However, with both Joginder and Dogra back in the pavilion, North tail failed to put up stiff resistance. Joginder scored a nifty 30 runs and the duo added 44 for the eight wicket. With Joginder falling to Ojha and Dogra back in the pavilion after a short while, North folded for 337.
