Batting records fall flat
July 27: Mahela Jayawardene figured prominently as a plethora of records fell by the wayside on the second day of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club on Tuesday. Here is a look at the numbers that mattered on the day.
Jayawardene now has with an astonishing aggregate of 2,641 runs at the SSC, the highest by a batsman at a single Test venue. His 10th hundred also took him past Sir Donald Bradman, who held the record previously with nine tons at the MCG. Jayawardene’s current average of 82.53 at the SSC is one of the best in the history of the game. Sri Lanka set a new team record of reaching 600 runs on three successive occasions at a venue against the same opponents having recorded scores in excess of 600 in the 2001 and 2008 series against India. The matches ended in an innings win on both occasions for the hosts.
Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara in registering his seventh double hundred equalled Wally Hammond’s tally. Only Brian Lara and Sir Don Bradman are ahead of him in the list. The captain-vice captain duo went on to post their 12th century stand, another national record.
Tuesday’s play marked Harbhajan Singh’s longest wait for a wicket. After grabbing the final wicket against South Africa in Kolkata earlier this year, the off-spinner had to wait for 449 deliveries for his next scalp.
After bowling 32.1 overs in Galle, Harbhajan had to toil for another 42.4 overs to find success. All the four specialist bowlers from India went for more than 100 runs in the first innings, a rare instance for the visitors.
