Beleagured BCCI may go back to Manohar
Former Board of Control for Cricket in India president Shashank Manohar has emerged as the leading candidate to be take over as interim board president in case N. Srinivasan has to make way after the arrest of his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan by Mumbai Police.
Although Srinivasan has struck a defiant pose and vowed to continue his reign during his short visit to Mumbai on Saturday, his position remains untenable.
Voices within the cricket board have grown against Srinivasan after the events that unfolded on Friday night resulting in Meiyappan’s arrest. However, Srinivasan cannot be forced out as per BCCI rules before completing al teast two years in office. He can be re-elected for a one-year term more, or shown the door during the September 2013 annual general meeting.
For his immediate ouster the board is mulling a special general body meeting, which then has to pass a resolution by a 2/3rd majority to suspend Srinivasan. He is believed to have the support of at least nine out of 31 members in the board. He has also power to postpone or cancel the SGM. Now, if Srinivasan refuses to go, the only alternative that remains is to impeach him.
Many top BCCI officials are already in Kolkata for the IPL final between the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians. They are set to discuss the issue in detail.
“We have been called for meeting tomorrow we will see how things pan out, what is being discussed and then we will come to conclusion and take a call,” confirmed a Mumbai Cricket Association official here on Saturday.
If Srinivasan steps down, former India cricketer Shivlal Yadav who is the vice-president from South Zone could take over as per BCCI rules. But sources in the BCCI believe that Manohar being an experienced lawyer and having held the top position before is the right man to pull them out of the current crisis. Though current vice-president Arun Jaitley is also in the fray to replace Srinivasan but sources believe he may not be keen on a short-term job.
Manohar, who was at the helm for three years before Srinivasan took over, supervised the cleaning up of the Indian Premier League mess and brought in more financial discipline. The exit of IPL founder Lalit Modi happened during his tenure. During his reign India became the ICC world champions in 2011 and also rose to the no 1 rank in Tests.
