Blogger Kritika: Stumped by cricket
While doing her B.Tech, Kritika Naidu realised that fate had different plans for her cricket, an unlikely choice for someone who had originally wanted to be an architect. “The game was something I was always interested in and would blog about, but I had never thought that I could make a career out of it,“ says the 25-year-old.
In 2010, after graduating from JBIT, Hyderabad, Kritika was chosen as MoneyGram's official blogger and covered the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. This year, she also made it to the top 25 (among 600,000 applicants) of Tourism Australia Chief Funster Contest.
“I just applied to be the blogger for MoneyGram and got selected. I was in Sri Lanka for two weeks to cover the World Cup Twenty20 and inter viewed Sri Lankan cap tain Mahela Jayawardene and a few English play ers. It was an amazing experience and further established the fact that I wanted to work in the sports industry,“ says Kritika.
In Sri Lanka for the Super 8, Kritika got an opportunity to interact with the players from West Indies, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and England. “The first thing that you notice about cricketers from foreign countries is how humble they are. In Sri Lanka, cricket is not a craze and the players can easily walk on the streets without attracting any attention. And Darren Sammy, the West Indies captain, is as high spirited in real life as he appears on field.
It's a nice experience to speak to them as they are very polite and shy,“ adds Kritika, who hasn't yet got an opportunity to speak to the Indian players.
Talking about how cricket became a passion for her, Kritika says, “We had just moved to Hyderabad in 2002 from Pune. I barely knew anyone and didn't have a lot of friends, so I would watch cricket all day long. My dad is a cricket buff too, so I had him for company .“ Apart from cricket, the young blogger also loves to read, paint and travel.
Though cricket is generally viewed as a man's territory, Kritika begs to differ. “There was no Facebook earlier and I would go online and join Orkut's sport com munities and talk to like-minded er and people will surely read your blogs if they are interest ing and it has got nothing to do with whether you are a girl or boy,“ says Kritika.
Working with cricket maga zine Wisden India in Bengaluru, Kritika is at peace for finally having found her “cricket heaven“. “People working here are such pros, they know ing here are such pros, they know the score, the year... all the specifics. I can finally talk about cricket and not be the oddone out.“
“I can't wait to interact with the Indian cricketers. Hopefully, when a tournament takes place in Bengaluru,“ she concludes.
