Clarke might captain Pune: Roy
Michael Clarke, who was signed by Pune Warriors India in the 2013 IPL auctions, may lead the side in the sixth edition of the cash-rich tournament ahead of the team’s icon player Yuvraj Singh.
Not a familiar figure in the T20 arena, Clarke was bought for his base price $400,000 by the Sahara group.
But it’s a clear indication that the team management might pick him as a captain so that Yuvraj can concentrate on his batting. Sushanto Roy, the MD of Sahara Adventure Sports, didn’t rule out the possibility.
“We would look at him (Clarke) as captain material. He has been a great leader for Australia. We haven’t decided anything on it, but we will surely give it a thought,” he said.
Clarke, who came in as a replacement for Yuvraj Singh last season, may not be an automatic choice in the playing eleven and it was a telling story when no other franchise except for Pune bid for the batsman. “Clarke has the experience that he can share with the younger players. He has been in good form of late and he can contribute to the team,” Roy said.
The franchise, which pulled out of the auctions in 2012 in dramatic circumstances, was active this time around signing Sri Lankan mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis, India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar and the little known Australian pacer Kane Richardson for $700,000.
“Mendis is in good form. He has been picking wickets as well,” added Roy.
