Consultants refuse to take blame
Mumbai, Jan. 29: VMS consultants, the Ahmedabad company providing services for the renovation of the Eden Gardens in Kolkata has refused to take the blame for the delay in completing the work.
“We provided consulting services in the areas of structural and civil engineering, master planning and design of the part of the renovation project for the Eden Gardens and were co-ordinating the project time to time”, Hiren Shah, one of seven officials of the company said from Ahmedabad.
Shah has 20 years of experience designing and managing a broad spectrum of projects. He worked for five years in Africa where he lead field engineering and project management teams on large industrial projects.
“We are in this profession for over 40 years. We have been providing services to the Eden Gardens since 1987. The original Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad was also designed by us. Apart from these two stadiums, we have designed a few sports complexes”, he added.
Renovation has been on to meet the standards set by the International Cricket Council for the 2011 World Cup. The Cricket Association of Bengal retained the team of Burt Hill and VMS to renovate the stadium including a new clubhouse and players’ facilities, upgrading the exterior wall to give the stadium a new look, cladding the existing roof structure with a new metal skin, new/upgraded patron amenities and signage, and general infrastructure improvements.
The main construction work is being carried out by Shapoorji Pallonji.
The relocation of the India-England match was recommended by an ICC team comprising of Professor Ratnakar Shetty, Campbell Jamieson, Chris Tetley and Professor Eugene van Vuuren. However, venue consultant, van Vuuren was the most unhappy with the progress of work, it is learnt.
