Cops intensify hunt for Lalit Mod
Chennai city police on Tuesday said they have intensified the hunt for Lalit Modi, the former chairman of IPL, who had allegedly swindled Rs 468 crore while conducting first three seasons of IPL.
The move comes with IPL season 5 all set to begin on Wednesday in the city.
“He is still wanted by the Chennai police. We are looking for him. Despite many summons, he never appeared before the investigating officer,” said a senior official who is familiar with the case against the former czar of IPL.
Chennai city police had registered a case against Modi and six others based on a complaint by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about misappropriation of `468 crore during IPL matches conducted in the first three seasons.
Cases under sections of criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, falsification of accounts and criminal conspiracy were registered in October 2010.
Other than Modi, BCCI had accused World Sports Group executives Venu Nair, Andrew Gerogio, Seamus O’Brian and Haris Krishnamachari, Ajay Varma, a representative of Visual Impact and Kunal Das Gupta of a media management firm in Mumbai.
Police summoned all the accused to appear before the investigation officer but Modi had so far failed to come in person and meet police officials in Chennai.
“Some of the seven accused came and appeare before the authorities but Modi never turned up,” a police official said.
