Court upholds TNCA stands
Expect a full stadium for IPL-V semifinal and final. Bringing cheer to cricket fans who might have missed recent live action at the Chepauk due to lack of seating space, Madras High Court Thursday allowed Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) to reopen the I, J and K stands for a week.
The stands with a joint seating capacity of 12,500 have been out of use since August last after the state government declared them “unauthorised”.
A vacation bench of justices V. Dhanabalan and T. Mathivanan, however, directed TNCA to give a safety and security undertaking to Chennai Corporation.
HC posted the case for further hearing after two weeks and made it clear its final order would be subject to the outcome of writ petitions heard.
TNCA has petitioned the court to quash an August 2011 order of the corporation and direct it to permit use of the stands pursuant to a letter dated May 16, 2012, issued by the state housing and urban development secretary to member-secretary of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority approving a recommendation of the multi-storey building panel to issue planning permission.
