Cricket: India give new meaning to hunger for victory
India were so anxious about capturing the World Cup in front of their demanding fans that they were too nervous to eat, said winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
"Playing was not easy as there was a lot of anxiety," said Dhoni after Saturday's six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the final.
"Nowadays the pressure we go through is a lot. Sometimes the players don't even eat because of the anxiety."
Dhoni, man-of-the-match for his 91 not out, sent a 33,000 capacity crowd at the Wankhede stadium, and millions of India fans beyond, into a frenzy by ending the match with a straight six off seamer Nuwan Kulasekara.
But Dhoni revealed: "I was emotionally confused. I wanted a wicket (stump) but was in the middle of the pitch and Yuvraj (Singh, India's other not out batsman) was at the other side.
"I thought hugging can be done later. But he came and jumped on me."
