Deccan Chargers eye good start in IPL-5

They may not boast of big names in the competition, but IPL-2 champions — Deccan Chargers — do possess the right blend of flamboyance and flair that should see them sailing into the business end of the tournament.

According to former Indian off-spinner S.L. Venkatapathy Raju, the start would be crucial. “Twenty20 is anyone’s game. It all depends on how a team performs on a given day. We all saw what Deccan Chargers did in the second edition of the competition in South Africa. They would need a good start. Winning the first few matches would give them the much-needed confidence. Once Chargers get the momentum, they can build on it,” he said.

Vivek Jaisimha, former Hyderabad Ranji coach believes that the tournament is a golden opportunity for the local players to make a mark.

“The likes of Ashish Reddy, Ravi Teja and Ahmed Quadri are high on confidence after having done well in the domestic circuits. The local players have the knowhow of the conditions, and would be eager to capitalise on it. I would also keep a close watch on Bharat Chipli. He is an attacking player and can definitely deliver the goods,” he said.

Vivek feels that big names in any team would be of no use if they don’t perform. “All it matters is how much wickets or runs you score. You may have done well internationally, but that counts for nothing if you can’t come up with a good show,” he said.

On Chargers’ chances in the competition, Vivek said, “It would all boil down to the combination that the team chooses to go with. All it takes is a few overs to change the complexion of the game. I would expect them (Chargers) to do well.”

The Bulls open their IPL-5 campaign against defending champions Chennai Super Kings at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
