Don't write off Viru & Gauti, says More

The odds are stacked against Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir from making a comeback, but former BCCI selection committee chairman Kiran More says it would be premature to write off the chances of the Delhi duo. The dashing performances of Sehwag and Gambhir are in danger of fading away from fans’ memory because both of them haven’t played for India in recent times.

There isn’t clamour for their recall because the national team have been doing well in their absence.
Sehwag and Gambhir were not even picked for the India ‘ A’ squad that is now touring South Africa. More, however, foresees a return for the two. “They are classy players. It’s just a matter of time before they scored runs in domestic cricket. We all know that Viru will be unstoppable if he gets going. He can destroy any bowling irrespective of the conditions,” the former Indian wicketkeeper said.
What makes the return of Sehwag and Gambhir highly unlikely is the fine performance of Shikar Dhawan and others.
Dhawan had a brilliant start to his Test career with a fastest century on debut against Australia and the left-handed opener has been doing well in the ODIs too.
With 430 runs in seven innings M. Vijay was the top run-scorer in India’s last series against Australia.
Rohit Sharma, too, has found his feet in his new role as opener.
According to More, the jury is still out on Rohit’s readiness for Tests. “Rohit is no doubt talented. He is doing a good job in the ODIs, but he needs to be more consistent before staking a claim for a Test berth,” he said.
More gave the thumbs up to Dinesh, who has done well on his comeback, to seal a Test slot purely as a batsman. “Leave his keeping skills; his batting talent is considerable. I think he is only next to Dhoni in the list of India’s current wicketkeeper-batsman,” he added.
More helped Dhoni improve his keeping skills during his early days.
More is also impressed with the way Ambati Rayudu and Ajinkya Rahane played in Zimbabwe. “They performed to their potential in the bilateral series.”
