England captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and elected to bat against Sri Lanka in the fourth quarterfinal of the 2011 cricket World Cup at R. Premadasa stadium here on Saturday. England have named an unchanged team while Sri Lanka replaced pacer Nuwan Kulsekera with left-arm spinner Rangana Herath.

There were showers at daybreak here, but the skies cleared up before the start of the match. The weatherman has forecast thunderstorm and rain during the day. There have been intermittent rain in the last couple of days.

Sri Lanka had to cancel their morning practice session on Thursday due to rain. On the eve of the match on Friday, tarpaulins came out to cover the entire outfield after another shower. Heavy rain washed out the group A match between Sri Lanka and Australia after 32.5 overs March 6.

The winner of this quarterfinal will take on New Zealand, who upset South Africa on Friday, in the first semi-final here Tuesday. The second semi-final will be held on Wednesday in Mohali between arch rivals India and Pakistan. Teams:

Sri Lanka: Kumar Sangakkara (captain and wicket-keeper), Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Silva, Angelo Mathews, Lasith Malinga, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath. England: Andrew Strauss (captain), Eoin Morgan, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Matt Prior (wicket-keeper), Graeme Swann, James Tredwell, Chris Tremlett, Jonathan Trott, Luke Wright. Umpires: Billy Doctrove (West Indies) and Simon Taufel (Australia) TV umpire: Tony Hill (New Zealand) Match referee: Jeff Crowe (New Zealand)

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
