PV Sindhu, the Hyderabad shuttler, has shocked everyone with her performance in the World Badminton Championships. Just 18, Sindhu bagged a bronze in this tournament. DC Online takes a look at why the young shuttler deserves nothing but a standing ovation from the nation:Sindhu became the first Indian woman singles player to win a medal at the World C'ships:A medal at the World Badminton Championship has long eluded India’s greatest female badminton players. PV Sindhu’s brilliant performance has ended the drought. India thanks her for winning bronze.
On her way to bronze, she defeated numerous opponents who were ranked higher than her:What makes the medal extra special is the list of formidable opponents Sindhu had to face on her way to the semifinal. Her first seeded opponent was 2nd seed Yihan Wang. Sindhu, who is seeded 10, defeated Yihan 21-18, 23-21. Her next opponent was Shixian Wang, seeded seventh. Sindhu defeated Shixian 21-18, 21-17. The only person Sindhu lost to was the eventual champion Ratchanok Inthanon.
She brought glory to the nation when others failed:India has, today, a good number of badminton players to be proud of—Saina Nehwal, Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponnappa and Parupalli Kashyap to name a few. When all of them failed, the rising star Sindhu came to the rescue and showed phenomenal courage to break the Chinese stronghold in badminton.
She brings hope to the nation that has only recently started taking badminton seriously:It is difficult to promote any sport other than cricket in India. Despite this, popularity of badminton in the nation is steadily rising in the past few years and with Indian Badminton League set to start in a few days, the popularity is all set to skyrocket. With her winning the elusive medal at the world championship, the sport cannot ask for a better way to kick-start the IBL tournament.
She strengthens the nation’s presence in the sport:We can never have enough talent when it comes to individual sports such as tennis and badminton. While the likes of Saina, Jwala and Ashwini has in the past raked in medals and brought great glory to the nation, the arrival of Sindhu has bettered our chances at bagging a few more medals at the international level.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
