Hyderabad in driver’s seat

Hyderabad, Nov. 18: Half centuries by Akshat Reddy, B. Sandeep and Ahmed Quadri helped Hyderabad consolidate their position against Tripura on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Plate division league match at the Gymkhana grounds on Thursday.

At 277 for 4 in reply to the visitors’ 140, the hosts have a first innings lead of 137 runs with six wickets in hand.

Sandeep, who scored a century on Ranji debut against Jharkhand last week, was batting on a steady 76. Keeping company was Quadri, with a fluent 54. They have put together 105 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket so far. The two were also involved in a century partnership (109 for the fifth wicket) in the previous match.

Sandeep was his confident self as he collected runs coolly, occasionally switching to aggression as he hit nine well-time boundaries in his 129-ball innings.

Quadri’s knock resembled Sandeep’s. The senior partner accumulated his runs at a brisk pace and cashed on leg-spinner Subal Chowdhury’s short-pitched deliveries to send them soaring out of the ground twice. Barring another boundary, there were no big hits as the 28-year-old rotated the strike well.

Earlier, opener Akshat Reddy hung around for over three hours to hit 70 in 141 balls, nine of which fetched him boundaries.

Tripura began the day badly, losing their last four wickets for just 18 runs in just 9.4 overs in the morning. Seamer Alfred Absolem cleaned up the tail with a three-wicket burst.
