Hyderabad suffer heartbreak

Hyderabad, Dec. 4: Hyderabad suffered a severe setback as they conceded the crucial first innings lead in their drawn Ranji Trophy Plate division league match against Goa at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium here on Saturday.

Resuming the day at 351 for 5, needing 132 for the crucial lead, the hosts folded up for 394, thereby handing their opponents three points to slip to fourth on the six-team table. With just 10 points from four matches, Hyderabad now require an outright win over table-toppers Madhya Pradesh (15 points) in their last league game beginning on December 8 and hope Goa (11) do not defeat punching bags Tripura (who have lost all their four matches by an innings at least so far) to qualify for the knockout stage and thereby push for a place in the Elite group. Tough ask.

Hyderabad’s hopes of pushing past the Goan total were dashed in the eighth over on Saturday when mainstay Ahmed Quadri was trapped leg before wicket by Saurabh Bandekar after adding just eight to his overnight total of 68.

With just the tailenders for company and the Goan bowlers on top, last recognised batsman Ibrahim Khaleel could not do much. He was bowled by Amit Yadav after making just 24. That was the beginning of the end as Alfred Absolem and Lalith Mohan followed in quick succession.

Goa piled the misery on Hyderabad in its second innings by hitting 127 for 2 in the 34 overs they got to bat. Opener Vaibhav Naik scored an unbeaten 58 while Reagan Pinto remained not out on 23 when stumps were drawn.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
