Hyderabad's Syeda Falak makes history
Hyderabad karateka Syeda Falak showed her prowess once again by clinching a gold medal in the women's 68 kg individual kumite category at the Grand National Karate Championship organised by the Karate Association of India at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
Falak, who is a student of Villa Marie Women's College, defeated her counterpart from Sikkim 10 3 in the sixth and final round. She had earlier won all her five rounds -against karetekas from Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and West Bengal -quite con vincingly.
The Grand Nationals -which had competitions in cadet junior and senior categories -featured around 1,200 karatekas from 32 states and police and para-military teams.
Thanks to the victory, Falak has qualified for the World Karate Championship to be held in Spain in November.
A month after the Worlds, Falak will represent India at the Asian Karate Championship scheduled to be held in Dubai.
In 2014, Falak will be a memeber of the Indian contingent for the Asian Games to be held in South Korea, making her the first karateka from Hyderabad to do so.
