I’m far from finished: Herschelle Gibbs

Cricket’s aesthetics have never appealed to Herschelle Gibbs.

There have been far too many incidents (including his tell all) that were interspersed between those pleasing cover drives.

In Chennai to represent the Cape Cobras in the Champions League the South African, was as relentless as ever and promised he is not finished yet.

Excerpts:

On his attacking brand of cricket: I will never change my style. In cricket everybody needs a bit of luck and if luck goes my way, then I can be as dangerous as anyone.

To play shots is an instinct, and there have been times where I have rued the shot I played.
On what keeps him going: I am far from finished. Mark Ramprakash is still playing at the age of 42. There are a lot of guys in the counties playing over 40.

I’d like to achieve and improve all the time. With regards to the Cobras, I’ve done well for them in limited overs cricket and feel very comfortable. I want to play for the Proteas in the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka. I still enjoy every game I play, and I think there is another three seasons left in me.

On the response to his book: Back home, a lot of people talked about it. I didn’t deliberately want it to be a controversial one. It was a very honest account of things, and that facet was appreciated by the readers and teammates alike.

It was life as I saw it. I was relieved once the book was published.

On Gary Kirsten taking over as SA coach: In the past, I have seen many coaches being tense and a bit afraid of situations. But Gary has a wealth of experience at the top level and extremely composed. So he will definitely be successful.

On Cape Cobras in the CL T20: Fielding is definitely our strength. With the likes of Justin Kemp, J.P. Duminy, Justin Ontong and myself we form a strong cordon in the inner ring. It gives us an advantage during the power plays.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
