Indian spinners, pacers go dutch on the Netherlands

New Delhi: The wicket falls in quick successions have pressed the panic button for the Netherlands and they are now facing a complete collapse here at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Piyush Chawla has picked up his second wicket by sending off Alexei Kervezee, who in the previous over ran out Tom de Grooth.

Earlier, lifted by the performance of spinners, Indian pacers Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khan inflicted heavy damage on the Dutch batting line up. Nehra fired off an offcutter to get rid of Tom Cooper and Khan trapped Bas Zuiderent for a duck.

The Dutch are in trouble now on the batting track of Kotla as the best of their lot is back in the pavilion.

Yuvraj Singh trapped Wesley Barresi in front of the stumps in the last ball of his first over to claim his first victim and struck again to take off Ryan ten Doeschate.

It was Chawla who got the first breakthrough against the Netherlands by removing Eric Szwarczynski after the Oranges forced Mahendra Singh Dhoni to resort to his spinners early into the match following a solid start.

Chawla’s googly deceived Szwarczynski, going past him to work its magic on his leg and middle stumps.

The pitch has nothing for the pacers and MSD called off spearhead Zaheer Kahn after just three overs while Ashish Nehra’s first spell featured only one over.

"The ball may keep a little low in the second innings, but this is a batsman's pitch alright,” Sunny Gavaskar has said during the pitch report.

Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh and Piyush Chawla were given the new ball.

Netherlands captain Peter Borren won the toss and elected to bat in a Group B World Cup match against India.

India made one change from the side that beat Ireland by five wickets, bringing in left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra for Munaf Patel.

The Dutch included Bradley Kruger and Eric Szwarczynski in place of Bernard Loots and Berend Westdijk.

A victory for India in this day-night game will virtually assure them a place in the quarterfinals.

The Netherlands are yet to win a match in the tournament.
