It will be a tough opener, says Afridi
Pakistan, ravaged by infighting and match-fixing allegations, will look to turn a corner against a formidable Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup opener at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium. Speedster Shoaib Akthar and batsman Shoaib Malik return to the squad, providing the team with experience.
The visitors had a practice session in the morning but Akthar joined the team only in the evening.
The losing team will in all probability face a must win situation against India. “Sri Lanka are a highly competitive side and it will be a tough opener for us. We have the resources in place. There is good balance in our attack and I am hopeful of Akthar being in good rhythm. The wickets here aid spin and our spinners having been doing well,” said Afridi.
The batting department does not inspire confidence. With three senior players not making the squad, Afridi will have to shoulder more responsibility. “The youngsters have all done well in domestic competitions and will be given an opportunity. They are not on a holiday here,” explained Afridi.
Chasing under lights has been a tough proposition here but both captains noted that the toss would not be all important.
“The toss will be 50-50 and we still have to do well in all departments to win a game. The final in 2008 was won by a freakish hundred by Sanath Jayasuriya and Ajanta Mendis claiming six wickets.
“Both are not available now and it is a chance for the others in the team to stand up. It’s going to be a tough tournament and we will have to intense,” said Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara.
