Kaushik cracks century

Hyderabad, Sept. 10: Tamil Nadu batsmen K. Kaushik Gandhi and Vijay Shanker hit a century each to hog the opening day’s honours in the Moin-ud Dowla cricket tournament that got underway at various grounds here on Friday.

Electing to bat, the Tamil Nadu pummelled the Goa bowling attack via Kaushik and Vijay to pile 361 for the loss of 9 wickets in their 90 overs at the Osmania University ground.

Kaushik was the star, belting 14 boundaries in his mammoth 162. He was a picture of absolute authority during his 235-ball innings that boosted the team total.

Kaushik was well-supported by Vijay, who smashed 112. Vijay’s knock contained 13 well-timed hits to the fence and came off 189 deliveries.

With the two in full flow, the Goa bowlers could not do much. Saurabh Bandekar (2/39) and Robin D’Souza (2/67) were the only ones of note.

In another match, three half-centuries propelled Hyderabad President’s XI to an impressive 341 for 6 in 90 overs against Vidarbha. Benjamin Thomas, N. Arjun Yadav and Abhinav Kumar came up with useful knocks to put the hosts in a position of strength by the end of the first day’s play.

Benjamin blasted 15 fours in his 95-ball 73, Arjun made an aggressive 88 which contained four sixes and and five boundaries while Abhinav contributed 55 in 93 balls, three of which were despatched to the RGICS boundary. Captain Ravi Teja chipped in with 43 which included eight fours.

The Hyderabad main team did not fare that well though, allowing Orissa score 325 for 7 in their 90 overs after electing to field at the NFC ground.

The Beheras — Natraj and Niranjan — came good with the bat, scoring 87 and 51 respectively. Biplab Samantray (66) too proved a thorn for HCA XI, for whom only Ahmed Quadri was impressive. The allrounder lived up to his reputation of being a consistent performer by taking 4 wickets for 69 runs.
