Kenya’s Mandela up for world league C’ship
As South Africa legend Nelson Mandela struggles for his life, another Nelson Mandela is preparing to represent Kenya in the ICC world cricket league championship at the Mannofield Park, Aberdeen, on Sunday.
Kenya’s 25-year-right-arm fast bowler Mandela has played five one-day internationals and four Twenty20 games.
Speaking to this paper, Mandela said: “I feel proud to be known as ‘Nelson Mandela’. He has been a legend.
“The nickname (Nelson Mandela) was given by my mother Appoline.
“I pray and wish that the 95-year-old South African leader, who is critically ill, recovers soon. I feel sorry for his family.”
Earlier, Thomas Odoyo, the team’s assistant coach and Nelson’s uncle, said: “Nelson’s real name is Nelson Odhiambo. We nicknamed him Mandela as he was born when Mandela toured Kenya after being released from the prison. And the name stuck.
“Unfortunately my nephew has never had a chance to meet the great man. I have not met the legend either. If the opportunity comes, I would introduce him as his hero. I would also discuss how he can advice us to be humble,” Odoyo said.
