Kiwis crumble in second Test
New Zealand were dispatched for 174 but the follow on was not enforced by England at tea on the third day of the second Test at Headingley on Sunday.
Because of the first-day washout, four-day rules were in effect, meaning New Zealand had to score within 150 of England’s 354 to make the hosts bat again.
But as soon as the Kiwis were all out in 44 overs and 3 1/2 hours, England skipper Alastair Cook wanted the pitched rolled in preparation for a second bat with a 180-run lead.
New Zealand, despite a last-wicket flurry of 52 runs, were routed by superb bowling from spinner Graeme Swann, 4/42, and fast bowler Steve Finn, 3/36.
The Kiwis were hardly less despairing exactly a week after they were bowled out for 68 to bring an abrupt end to the first test at Lord’s. That Test finished in four days, and this was on course for a repeat and an England series sweep.
After a good start by the openers to be 55 without loss, the Kiwis were reduced to 122/9.
They went to lunch at 62/2 with openers Peter Fulton and Hamish Rutherford out in the 20s to Finn.
Finn carried on after the break, bowling Ross Taylor for 6 when he dragged onto his stumps.
