Lara joins big talent bazaar

Bengaluru, Dec. 20: The Players’ auction for the Indian Premier League-4 will be held in Bengaluru on January 8 & 9. About 416 players will come up for auction in the glitzy league which will be conducted by the famous Englishman, Richard Madley.

West Indian legend Brian Lara, making a comeback to cricket, will be one of the top players at the auction, going at the highest base price of $400,000, as is Australian Adam Gilchrist.

Among the Indians, only three – Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and Yuvraj Singh-are the only ones to command such a price. Top stars like Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina have been retained by their franchisees – Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings respectively and will not come up for auction.

Under the IPL player regulations, each franchisee could retain up to four players with a maximum of three Indians and only Mumbai and Chennai have used up the quota and have only $4.5 million remaining from the $9 million cap.

Following the stay granted by the Bombay High Court, IPL-4 will have 10 teams including the two new ones, Kochi and Pune.

Top stars to miss out on the auction include Australians Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Mitchell Johnson, who have opted to stay out of the league.

The Australians have only three players —- Shaun Marsh, Gilchrist, and Brett Lee in the top bracket base price for the auction.

The Hussey brothers Mike and David are in the second base price bracket of $300,000 while T20 specialist David Warner is in the third bracket with a base price of $200,000.

England have six players — Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Swann, Luke Wright and Michael Yardy in the top bracket.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
