Meeting to decide tainted trio’s fate
The Ravi Sawani report, dealing with the involvement of Rajasthan Royals’ trio in the infamous spot-fixing scandal which rocked the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League, will be taken up for deliberations by Board of Control for Cricket in India’s disciplinary committee here on Friday.
The report will be studied by the committee comprising BCCI vice-presidents Arun Jaitley and Niranjan Shah and its findings presented at the board's annual general meeting in Chennai on September 29.
BCCI president N. Srinivasan was also part of the disciplinary committee before his decision to step aside from the top post in light of the arrest of his son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings team principal Gurunath Meiyappan for alleged betting.
The meeting will decide the fate of the trio — S. Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan — who are facing charges of giving away a pre-determined number of runs during some of the matches of this year’s IPL.
The suspended trio, also under investigation by Delhi Police for the scandal, are out on bail and their contracts with their franchise have already been terminated. They are likely to face bans from the game if the charges are proved.
Sawani, who is in charge of the BCCI's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, had handed over the report to the board during its working committee meeting in Kolkata last month.
The one-man panel had submitted an interim report earlier but it was put on hold by the board as Sawani had not been able to speak to Chandila, who was granted bail on Monday.
However, the off-spinner, who was allowed a two-day bail earlier on August 6 to perform the last rites of his deceased brother, is yet to meet former police officer Sawani.
The Indian cricket board is already facing flak after its’ two-member probe panel to look into the spot-fixing and betting scandal was held as ‘illegal and unconstitutional’ by the Mumbai high court. The matter is now sub-judice with the Supreme Court after the BCCI decided to file a special leave petition against the ruling.
The two-member panel comprising former judges T. Jayaram Chouta and R. Balasubramanian, had given a clean chit to Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals co-promoter Raj Kundra in the spot-fixing and betting scandal.
