Modi’s reply not acceptable, says BCCI
Suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi’s ouster now looks imminent with the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Tuesday rejecting his defence of all three showcause notices issued to him.
Board secretary N. Srinivasan said Modi’s replies were “unacceptable” and he had recommended the disciplinary committee take further action against Modi. “Since Modi had accused me of being biased against him, after a thorough and careful reading of his explanation against the charges, I have passed an order that it was unacceptable,” Srinivasan said.
“So, as advised by BCCI president Shashank Manohar, my order has been referred to the members of the general body to ratify my decision on the SGM called on July 3. It is left to them to ratify my order after which the matter will be referred to the disciplinary committee,” he said.
Modi was suspended from all positions in the BCCI, including as chairman and commissioner of the Indian Premier League, just after the third edition of the Twenty20 league on multiple charges ranging from financial irregularities to trying to set up a rebel league in England.
The embattled administrator had sent a 15,000-page reply to the first notice that included allegations of bid-rigging and proxy investment. His responses to subsequent showcause notices, based on an email from England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Giles Clarke, that accused him of trying to destroy the structure of world and Indian cricket, and the alleged irregularities in the awarding of theatrical rights, were less copious.
